- I promise! ...these programs will free you from the dreaded template dependency.

-
For the beginner, how-to books tend to overwhelm with too much information.

- If you are starting an e-commerce business, avoid falling under the tyranny of a webmaster.

As a child, did you learn to ride a bicycle by watching someone else ride your bicycle? ...or by reading a book on Newtonian Physics? It's a safe bet that you learned by trial & error while accumulating a few bruises in the process--maybe dad or an older brother helped a little bit. Things haven't changed in the years since.

Anything that circumvents the normal learning process will cause a dependency on something or somebody.

My tutorial programs support sharp e-commerce folks who plan to develop website building skills. These are skills that will last a lifetime.

The most basic of the basics is registering a website and hiring the services of a web host.

A Domain Name is simply your unique internet address. It looks like this: http://www.YourName.com

My Domain Name, for example, is http://www.WDSlibrary.com. The "http://" part can usually be omitted.

A webhost is the place to store your website allowing a billion websurfers to see your website. They only need (or have a link to) your Domain Name.

A webhost will cost you under ten dollars a month. Registering your domain name is a few dollars a year. There is no need to pay someone to help you with this. Most webhosts have simple fill-in-the-blank forms to do this. If you do need some help, I'll be happy to do that by telephone.

On the other end of the spectrum is the place you actually create your website. There are remarkable software programs that allow you to do this called "HTML Editors."

On the surface, an HTML editor looks and feels like a word processing program--even an email program. But underneath there is some wonderful magic going on... It's called Source Code.

Hey! Your browser probably has at the tip-top of the page something
listed as "View". If you click on it, you'll see something like "Source" or "Page Source." Click on that and you'll see the magic that turns text and pictures into a website. (Go ahead, try it! You can't mess anything up.)

So first, you must learn is to build something called an Index Page or Home Page. It's the page that comes up when someone clicks on your domain name (the http/www stuff). All other webpages radiate from this "index" page. Linking webpages together is EASY!

Then you'll need to learn the simple process of sending your pages (called files) over to your webhost. It happens automatically and is very EASY! The program that does this is called File Transfer Protocol, or FTP. There are some free FTP programs available. The one I use now is open-source and available without charge.

From your "index" base, you can add as many files/webpages as your creativity will allow. You can make changes and additions to your heart's content. In my website (I just checked) I have 717 unique files.

So what about this program?
My bicycle analogy suggested that the best learning system is trial-and-error. But it's a lot easier if someone helps you get started... like ol' dad balancing the bicycle as his kid wobbles off for a first solo ride. That, in principle, is what my tutorials are designed to do.

For this, I offer personal support by telephone or by computer-based audio files (TalkShoe, etc), then there are screen shots of the software programs you'll be using, and finally there's instructions for specific goals, such as creating and maintaining your first Index Page.

As supplementary information, I have available a number of eBooks and a bunch of podcasts (audio files).
