Podcasting on a ShoeString!
To start the audio part of this tutorial, copy/paste (or type) the following URL into a separate browser:  www.askcarl.net/tutorial1.mp3
.
To do that, temporarily minimize [-] this page and open another browser link. Backspace out whatever is there and paste (or type) the above URL into that browser's box and start the recording... then reopen this page from your tool bar. You can control your individual learning speed by toggling back to your audio player to pause, rewind, or fast-forward.
Don't know how to Copy/Paste? It's simple. High-light the URL by running the mouse over the text while holding down the left mouse button. Press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and then the "C" key. That will put the high-lighted text temporarily in your computer's clip board. Then put the cursor in the blank browser window and press Ctrl + V ...and open the file.

Please don't feel I'm being patronizing if you're an experienced computer person. To be useful for everybody, this tutorial must be understandable by the least experienced among us. If you know a lot about computers, you'll still find this worthwhile...I'm sharing a somewhat unique approach to podcasting. If you're already a podcaster, we can learn from one another.
.
This will only take a few minutes of your time and should be an easy and fun journey.
- You'll learn a little bit about building a weblog...
- You'll learn my approach to show notes...
- I'll demonstrate a unique approach to recording...
- ...and converting analog into digital...
- And finally, adding a podcast to your very own weblog
!
.
I'll be talking to you as you scroll from screen-shot to screen-shot. You can use the up-down arrows on your keyboard, the center mouse wheel, or slide the vertical bar at the right of your screen.      =>
.
Of course, this 40-minute tutorial won't instantly support the creation of weblogs and podcasts, but it will provide a unique overview of my approach. I promise, when you get to the bottom of this webpage,
without regard to your skill level, you'll have some fresh ideas about podcasting.
.
As you scroll on down, this webpage will become a picture book... but you might as well get used to some geeky terms: This web page is an audio e-book and the pictures are called screen-shots.
.
Okay, if I'm not yakking at you right now, open another browser window so this webpage remains either on your screen or at the tool-bar below.
.
You'll want to have this page on-screen as I talk to you... although by clicking in the tool bar you can toggle back and forth between this and the audio player. It wouldn't hurt to jot down this URL (or copy it to NotePad) so you won't lose it: www.askcarl.net/OpenTutorial.html Copy it exactly as it appears including the capitalizations.
.
The second half of this tutorial is an audio URL. >www.askcarl.net/tutorial1.mp3< I didn't make it a link it because it needs to be opened in a second browser. When you do that, in a minute or two, I'll be talking to you from your computer's mp3 player starting with the introduction.
.
You can put the mp3 player in the toolbar below by clicking the [-] button at the top-right of your screen. It will continue to play. You can toggle back & forth simply by clicking between the tool bar & the [-] button.
.
In XP & FireFox, your tool bar will look like this screen shot. This e-book is pictured next to the start button with the audio player next to it.
tool bar
.
Most mp3 players have the look of an
old fashioned tape recorder: They will pause, fast-forward, and rewind. Go ahead and play around with it until you have it figured out. If either of these files disappear from your computer, don't worry ...you can get them going again with the URLs you've copied down.
.
By now, my voice should be coming from your computer's speakers (or from your iPod). All (10) screen shots will appear as you scroll down.

I added these two screen shots as an afterthought. Popular podcatchers are Juice & Apple's iTunes, but if you appreciate exquisite simplicity, FeedReader is perfect. The screen shot is Version 2.9, but I'm now using a later version. All versions are open source, free, and easy to download. Here's the link:

To play this program again, leave this where it is and slide the player bar all the way to the left and click the middle player button... it should start playing. You can also re-paste the mp3 URL into a new browser window.  Carl Weisbrod
